A short-term and imminent rainfall forecasting large model integrating monitoring data from satellites, radar and rain gauge stations has been officially launched.
According to the Institute of Care-Life in Chengdu, capital of Southwest China’s Sichuan Province, the rainfall forecast results of the Yushen 100 short-term and imminent rainfall forecasting large model have been integrated into the Sichuan Provincial Water Resources Department and the Department of Emergency Management of Sichuan Province.
It has also been incorporated into the Sichuan Provincial Natural Disaster Dynamic Risk Monitoring and Early Warning Platform, helping to enhance multi-hazard monitoring and early warning capabilities for flash floods, debris flows and landslides.
The large model is a collaborative achievement made by the Institute of Care-Life, Peking University, the National Meteorological Centre, the Institute of Mountain Hazards and Environment of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Sichuan University, Nanjing University, the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China and State Grid Sichuan Ya’an Electric Power (Group) Co., Ltd.
The project has received support from Sichuan’s open competition mechanism for disaster prevention, mitigation and relief.

The Yushen 100 short-term and imminent rainfall forecasting large model can give a pretty accurate prediction of rainfall for the next 0-2 hours,said Wang Tun, head of the Institute of Care-Life.
The large model is based on real-time observations from satellites, radar and rain gauge stations, combined with physical models and AI technology to achieve pretty accurate 0–2 hour rainfall forecasts, said Wang who is a PhD supervisor at the Institute of Mountain Hazards and Environment of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
Short-term and imminent forecasting refers to short-range and nowcasting forecasting, where 2–12 hours are classified as short-term forecasting and 0–2 hours imminent (nowcasting) forecasting.
